The spec sheet is the only place two turf quotes meet

Turf salespeople talk about look and feel. Both are real, and neither one predicts how a lawn ages.

The data sheet is different. It states the same measurements for every product a manufacturer sells, so two sheets can sit side by side and answer the same questions. Ask for the sheet by name for the exact product in the quote, and ask for it before signing anything.

The four numbers below appear on almost every sheet in the industry. Learn what each one means once, and every future turf quote becomes readable.

Number one: face weight

Face weight is the weight of yarn in one square yard of turf. Manufacturers state it in ounces. It counts only the fiber standing above the backing.

That last sentence is the whole trick. Some sheets also print a total product weight, and total weight includes the backing and the coating along with the yarn. A product can post a large total weight while carrying less actual grass than the product beside it.

Face weight is the closest thing to a density number a buyer gets. More yarn per square yard means more blades holding each other upright, more resistance to matting under foot traffic, and more material to wear through before the backing shows.

Two turf products at an identical price per square foot with different face weights are not the same purchase. Ask for face weight by that name. If a salesperson answers with total weight, ask again.

Number two: pile height

Pile height is the distance from the surface of the backing to the tip of a blade. Manufacturers state it in inches.

Taller pile photographs beautifully. In a showroom sample nobody has walked on, a long blade looks like a lawn somebody watered an hour ago.

Traffic changes that. A tall blade with nothing holding it up folds over and stays folded, and a folded lawn reads flat and shiny from across the yard. A shorter pile carrying a high face weight stands up under the same traffic, because the blades sit close enough together to brace each other.

Pile height also has to match the use. A putting surface needs a short, dense pile that rolls true. A pet area takes constant traffic in the same paths. A front lawn that nobody walks on can carry a taller blade and keep the look.

The pairing of these first two numbers matters more than either one alone. High face weight with moderate pile height gives a dense stand-up lawn. Moderate face weight stretched over a tall pile gives a thin one that lies down.

That pairing turns into a rule worth carrying into a showroom. Between two products at the same pile height, the one with the higher face weight is the denser lawn. Comparing face weight across two different pile heights says much less, because a taller blade needs more yarn to reach the same density.

Number three: the backing

The backing is the part of an artificial lawn nobody looks at and everybody depends on.

Two layers do the work. The primary backing is the woven sheet the machine tufts the yarn through. The secondary backing is a coating applied across the back of that sheet, and the coating locks every tuft in place so blades do not pull out of the lawn.

Manufacturers use one of two coatings. Polyurethane coatings stay flexible in temperature swings and hold their grip on the tufts. Latex coatings cost less and can grow brittle over years of heat. The data sheet names which one is on the roll, and any buyer can ask the question directly.

Perforation is the second half of the backing question. Holes punched through both layers are how water gets out of the lawn. Ask for the hole spacing and ask whether the perforation runs across the full width of the roll. Some products perforate only part of the roll and leave the rest solid.

A backing question worth asking on every quote: what happens at the seams. Seams join rolls together with tape and adhesive, and a seam that opens is the most visible failure an artificial lawn can have. The installer answers that one, and the answer belongs in writing.

Number four: drainage rate

Drainage rate is how fast water passes through the turf material. Manufacturers state it in inches per hour per square yard, and the number comes from a laboratory test on the material alone.

Two follow-up questions turn that number into something useful. Ask which test method produced it. Ask for a copy of the report.

Then understand what the number can and cannot promise. The material rate is a ceiling. Water that clears the backing in seconds still has to leave through the stone base underneath, and a poorly built base holds that water right under the lawn. The base under the turf sets the ceiling

Turf is a surface. What sits under it decides how the surface behaves.
