Gravel Driveway Repair: Only One of These Problems Needs New Stone

A rough gravel driveway usually gets the same treatment. The owner orders a load of stone, spreads it across the bad spots and waits. Six weeks later the bad spots look the way they looked before.

A gravel driveway fails three different ways, and from a truck window the three look alike. Ruts come from a base that lost its strength. Potholes open where water has nowhere to go. Stone that traveled leaves thin spots. Each failure takes a different repair at a different price, and new stone only answers one of them.

The federal manual on the subject says the same thing. The Gravel Roads Construction and Maintenance Guide, published in 2015 by the Federal Highway Administration with the South Dakota Local Technical Assistance Program, states that simply filling problem areas with new gravel is generally not wise.

Read the Driveway the Morning After a Hard Rain

Water writes the diagnosis on the surface. Walk the driveway once the rain stops and look at where the water went.

Water standing in the wheel tracks points at the base. Water pooled in a bowl at a low point points at drainage. A surface that drained clean but looks patchy, with a ridge of loose stone along both shoulders, points at migration.

Two more checks finish the read. Push a length of rebar into the bottom of a rut. If it slides past the stone by hand and keeps going, the layer under the stone has gone soft. Then look at the shoulders and the bottom of the slope. Loose stone banked up along the edges means the driving surface lost material sideways and downhill.

Ruts Mean the Base Moved

Ruts run in the wheel tracks. They start as shallow tracks and then deepen fast once water starts collecting in them.

The cause sits below the stone. The most extensive soil in Garland County is the Carnasaw series, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service describes Carnasaw as well drained with slow permeability, carrying 50 percent or more clay in the subsoil about a foot down. Water that reaches that clay stays a while. A loaded tire then pumps the wet ground beneath the base, stone presses down into it, the base thins, and the load starts landing on dirt.

The FHWA gravel roads guide names the same sequence. It states that water held in the road surface can lead to rutting that extends down into the subgrade. Ruts show up first where weight and water meet on the same square yard. The turn-in from the road, the flat landing at the bottom of a grade and the pad where a delivery truck parks are the usual three.

New stone does not fix this. A load of gravel poured into a rut puts more weight on the same soft layer. The stone sinks, the rut comes back in the same footprint, and the owner pays for the same repair twice.

The repair that holds starts with a shovel. A crew opens the failed section down to firm ground and dries or removes the wet material. Separation fabric goes down so the new base stone cannot press into the soil again. The base rebuilds in lifts, and every lift gets compacted before the next one goes on. The crown gets re-cut across the patch so the next storm runs off that section.

Ruts are usually local. One forty-foot section fails while the rest of the run carries traffic fine. That makes this a section rebuild priced by the section.

Potholes Mean Water Is Sitting

Potholes are round, and they cluster. They open at the bottom of a grade, beside a plugged culvert, on the flat landing near the garage and anywhere the crown has worn flat.

The mechanism is simple. Water stands in a low spot. A tire rolls through the puddle and pumps water down into the surface course, which floats the fine material up and out. Those fines are the binder holding crushed stone together. Once they leave, the stone ravels loose and a bowl opens. Every rain after that makes the bowl deeper.

The FHWA guide puts it in one line: standing water anywhere in the roadway will cause the surface to soften and fail.

Filling a pothole with stone and driving on it buys about two weeks. The low spot is still the low spot. Water finds it again on the next storm.

The repair fixes the water before it fixes the hole. A crew restores the crown so the surface sheds toward the shoulder, cuts or cleans the ditch so the shoulder has somewhere to send it, and clears the culvert. Then the crew cuts the pothole square down to sound material, fills it in lifts with matching surface gravel and compacts every lift.

Most of that invoice is machine time and drainage work. Stone is a small line on it.

Thin Spots Mean Stone Migrated

This is the refresh case, and it is the one a load of gravel actually answers.

Thin spots look patchy. Color changes across the driving lane where darker subgrade starts showing through the stone. A windrow of loose gravel, meaning a long ridge of it pushed off the driving lane, usually runs along both shoulders, with a fan of the same material spread at the bottom of the slope.

Nothing failed underneath. The base is sound, the drainage still works, and the driveway carries weight the way it always did. Traffic and weather simply moved the surface course off the driving lane over several years. Tires throw stone outward through a curve. Rain carries it downhill. A box blade or a plow pushes some of it into the shoulder every time it passes.

The fix is a driveway refresh. The crew pulls the windrows back onto the driving surface, adds surface aggregate to bring the depth back, re-cuts the crown and compacts the result. Nothing gets excavated, because nothing below the surface course is broken.

Washboarding belongs to this same layer. The FHWA guide lists four causes for it: driving habits, a lack of moisture, poor quality gravel and a surface with no crown. It also notes that motor graders get blamed for washboard and seldom cause it. Grading the ripples out and adding surface material with binder in it puts the driveway back.

What a Driveway Refresh Actually Includes

A refresh is a defined scope, so a quote should list the parts:

  • A grade and drainage check across the full run
  • Windrow recovery from both shoulders
  • New surface aggregate placed to a stated depth
  • Crown re-cut across the driving lane
  • Compaction while the material still holds moisture
  • Culvert and ditch clearing where the property has them
  • Edge definition where the driveway meets turf or beds

That last line is worth a paragraph. A driveway edge with nothing holding it keeps feeding stone into the lawn. Stone driveway bands set a hard shoulder along the driving lane, which keeps the surface course where it belongs and gives the property a finished line. Owners who add bands during a refresh tend to go longer between the next one.

Crown and Ditch Set How Often You Do This Again

Every repair above ends the same way, with a crown re-cut. That is not a finishing touch. The crown is the reason a gravel driveway drains at all.

A crowned surface sits higher down the center than at the shoulders, so water runs sideways off the driving lane within a few feet of landing. The FHWA gravel roads guide recommends about half an inch of crown per foot, which works out near a 4 percent cross slope, and it advises against exceeding 6 percent in any condition. A flat surface holds water on top of the stone, and water on top of the stone is how every failure in this article begins.

Central Arkansas gives that crown plenty to do. The 1991 to 2020 climate normals from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information put average annual precipitation at the Hot Springs 1 NNE station at 57.18 inches.

The ditch is the other half. A perfect crown pushing water into a shoulder that sits higher than the driveway just moves the puddle. Owners in Hot Springs Village with long wooded driveways often find the ditch filled with years of leaf litter and washed silt, and cutting it back open changes the driveway more than a load of gravel would.

Compaction finishes the job, and moisture is the part owners never see. The FHWA guide recommends working material to optimum moisture to reach maximum density, and it recommends placing gravel in separate layers whenever the total thickness will run over four inches. The same guide puts the minimum surface layer at three inches so a blade has material to work with on the next maintenance pass.

When Repair Stops Making Sense

Some driveways have passed the point where patching pays. Three signs say so.

Ruts return within one season after a proper section rebuild, which means the subgrade is weak along the whole run and not just under the patch. The surface has no fines left anywhere and ravels loose the length of the driveway. The driveway sits lower than the yard on both sides with no crown left to re-cut.

At that point a rebuild from the subgrade up costs less across ten years than an annual load of stone does. Questions Owners Ask About Gravel Driveway Repair

How do I know whether I need grading or new gravel?
Look at the shoulders. If loose stone has banked up along the edges, the driveway still has its material and needs it moved back and topped off. If the stone is gone with no windrow anywhere, it went into soft ground and the base needs attention.

Can I fill the potholes myself?
An owner with a wheelbarrow can fill one. It will reopen unless the low spot draining into it gets corrected first. The pothole is a symptom of where water sits.

What gravel goes on the surface of a driveway?
Crushed stone with angular faces and enough fine material to bind. The size numbers on a quarry ticket, such as #57 or #67, come from ASTM D448, the classification that sets those ranges. The FHWA gravel roads guide adds that good surface gravel needs a share of plastic material, usually natural clay, to give the stone its binding character. Angular pieces lock against each other under a tire, while rounded river rock and pea gravel roll out of the wheel tracks and end up in the grass.

How often does a gravel driveway need a refresh?
A driveway that drains well and carries family vehicles goes several years between refreshes. One that carries daily truck traffic, or one with a long grade and no ditch, comes due sooner. Drainage moves that interval more than anything else on the property.
