It turns the waterline into usable property. A walled shoreline gives you a clean, level edge: a place to set chairs, tie off a boat, mount a ladder, or step onto the dock without negotiating a mud bank. On tight lots, reclaiming that strip matters.

It works the neighbors’ water harder. A vertical face does not absorb wave energy; it reflects it. That reflected chop scours the lakebed at the wall’s toe and can nudge more energy toward unprotected banks nearby. Good design softens this (toe stone helps), but physics does not go away because the wall is pretty.
It trades habitat for hardness. A natural bank, even a scruffy one, feeds the lake with root structure and fish cover. A wall replaces that edge. For owners who fish their own shoreline, riprap or a planted bank keeps more life at the waterline.
